52 Ways to Make Money Online as a Stay at Home Mom

This post may contain affiliate links. Read more about how they work here.

Written by Nikki Dee

Being a stay-at-home mom is awesome except when you start to feel like all you do is wash socks, fix meals and try to end each day with your house looking at least the same as it did when the day began.

If you are anything like me, you want more. Like, maybe, occasional conversations with other adults. Or a little extra cash to get a babysitter for date night. And at some point, a lot of stay-at-home moms start to look around for a way to make money

Sometimes it is to make ends meet, and sometimes it is more about having something else to do with yourself other than just being “mommy.”

I've been there. This is why I started this blog and eventually why I wrote this blog post.

Before I give you the 52 Ways to Make Money as a Stay at Home Mom, there are a couple of things that I want to tell you.

First, it can be done. No matter what anyone tells you, making money online is absolutely, positively possible – even as a stay-at-home mom who spends her days catering to the whims of others.

Second, when you decide to make money online, do it like you do everything else: with everything you have.

Making money online can be life-changing if you let it. And to let it change your life, you have to be willing to start making those changes.

Set time aside every day to work on your chosen endeavor. Give yourself permission to protect that time.

You are worth it. And you will find that having a stream of income won’t just help your family’s finances. It will also help you in so many ways.

Before You Begin

Let’s talk about the basic 3 questions you should ask yourself before starting to make money online:

1. How much do you want/need to make?

2. How much do you want to work?

3. Do you want an online job or an online business?

The answers to these questions will help you decide what opportunities are right for you.

There are an endless number of ways to make money online.

You don’t have to choose a path that means a steep learning curve for you.

Start with your skills and knowledge and decide what path is easiest for you to travel.

You should know that I have tried most of the jobs on this list (or I know people who have). Some of them I loved and still use to make streams of income for myself. Some of them I wouldn’t do again unless you threatened my life.

If you want to know about the 12 Ways I Make Money Online and You Can Too, check out the blog post.

Otherwise, let’s jump right into the Ways to Make Money as a Stay at Home Mom

1. Start a Blog

Blogging is one of the best ways to make money online in my opinion.  However, just starting a blog won't make you any money.

You need a monetization plan. With blogging you can sell anything you want - your services, products, ML M products, affiliate products, ad space, the list goes on and on.

I go through exactly how to Start a Money Making Blog in this blog post.

2. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is making money by promoting other people’s products. It’s fun and it takes the pain out of the product creation process. To promote affiliate products, you can use a website, blog and email list. Simply create valuable content and recommend products to your audience.

3. Flip Used Stuff

Flipping used stuff is easy to do in your spare time without any experience or technical know-how. And the earning potential might surprise you. You can make a full-time income by flipping used furniture. With a little guidance and a good system in place, you can get started quickly and be turning a profit within a few days. Flipping used furniture is an attractive option for anyone who wants to work with their hands instead of sitting n front of a computer screen all day.

4. Make Money as a Freelance Writer

There are a ton of industries where you can make money by freelancing - and writing is one of the most popular. If you have a grasp on the style of writing that you want to get paid for, you can start earning money quickly.

5. E-commerce

E-commerce seems to be the buzzword of the internet marketing world these days. And for good reason. Have you ever wanted to open a  boutique but the overhead was just overwhelming? Thought about selling all of that original artwork you created but don’t want to rent studio space?

E-commerce is the solution.  A virtual storefront allows you to sell anything, to anyone at anytime. And without the hassle of creating the store from scratch when you harness the power of Shopify to get started. All you need is something to sell and Shopify to get started.

6. Become a Virtual Assistant

As moms, we are basically the virtual assistant of our family. Why not get paid for it?

You can get paid to do just about any project a person can think of from sending emails to outsourcing work. Virtual assistant job posts that you find will have a list of the responsibilities you can be expected to perform. Because these kinds of jobs can range in what is expected and the duration of the jobs, make sure to read any job posts that you apply for carefully.

Finding the right person or company to work for as a virtual assistant can make it easy to work around your stay-at-home duties. There are lots of programs online teaching you how to be a virtual assistant, but if you are ready to jump right in and start grabbing jobs, check out the ones on Flexjobs or Fiverr.

7. Learn Dropshipping

Want to make your online money with eCommerce, but don’t have anything to sell?  And…don't want to carry inventory?

Dropshipping is the answer.

It is the same basic idea as selling your own products online but without all the inventory. You find a company that supplies the product you want to sell and the buyers who want to buy the product. Essentially, you become the middleman. The dropshipper handles inventory, employees and shipping. You simply promote the products and sell them to interested customers.

This system greatly reduces the stress of selling physical products and makes it easy to turn a profit and keep overhead low.

8. Rep for a Company You Love

Have you used and loved products that you bought from a friend? It’s possible to make good money online by selling MLM products when you choose the right products and sell them the right way.

A lot of MLM reps get a bad name for their selling tactics like showing up in a friend’s inbox “Hey, girl, hey!” style.

Don’t do that.

When you choose a reputable company with good products and use attraction marketing to sell, you can be wildly successful with network marketing and keep all your friends.

9. Start an Etsy Shop

You can sell just about anything on Etsy - especially if you are crafty. I have a good friend who sells handmade earrings on Etsy- straight from her living room - and she’s got four kids to boot.

One of the best things about selling on Etsy is that you can find an outlet for your creativity. There is just something special about creating a thing with your hands that someone buys and uses. That one-of-a-kind craftsmanship can be hard to come by. Except on Etsy.

Plus with Etsy, once you set up your shop, you are ready to go. You don't have to worry about driving traffic to a website that no one would find otherwise. You can create your work and promote it using Etsy’s guidance. The audience is already there. You just have to show them your stuff.

10. Make Money Proofreading

Are you the kind of person who finds mistakes in everything you read? Put that skill to use as a proofreader.  You can get paid to read every word that a company or author publishes. Proofreaders are the last line of defense between the world and typos.

11. Become a Transcriptionist

Like Proofreading, there are companies everywhere that need transcription services. You can start with virtually no experience and work your way into higher pay. As a transcriptionist, you can work when you want as long as you meet your deadlines.

12. Use Your Graphic Design Skills

You can make money online as a freelance graphic designer. There is a high demand for anyone who knows how to do graphic design. And you can choose the exact kinds of jobs you want to do. If you are willing to put in some time and invest in professional software, you can make great money as a graphic designer.

Places to Sell Graphic Designs:

Envato

Creative Market

13. Harness Your Love for Travel

Become an online travel agent. These days just about anything can be done online and travel agents are no different. Whether a family wants to plan their first trip to Disney World or simply needs to find the best deals on hotels and meals while they travel, you can help make that happen.

14. Use Your Knowledge to Teach

Tutoring kids online is a good way to make money. Let’s face it, this post-pandemic world has us all pretty sure we CAN NOT help our kids with all their homework. Even as a homeschool parent, I have to lean heavily on resources and tutors to teach my kids subjects that aren’t my strengths.

But if you have the knowledge to share and enjoy working with kids, you could be making money online as a tutor. You can work as many hours per week as you have time for and you get the reward of watching a child that you help excel.

15. Flaunt Your Bookkeeping Skills

Every business on the planet has to handle money and the numbers associated with it. These companies are all too happy to hire someone to help them perform these bookkeeping tasks. If you have bookkeeping skills, use them to earn money from home.

16. Become an Online Fashion Stylist

Sounds crazy, right?

But it’s a real thing. It may even be exactly what the doctor ordered for you - a lover of clothes who now spends your days in sweats because spit-up is just too hard to get out of everything you own. Why not use our love for fashion to help someone else look their best?

17. Sell Stock Images

You can take photos and sell them to stock image brokers. These websites make images available for businesses to use on their websites, in their marketing, and in packaging.  Providing these stock images will make you extra money even on photos that you take today or even on all those pics sitting on your camera roll. I use Envato to purchase a lot of my stock photos, but you can also sign up as a provider and get paid.

18. Make and Sell Printables

Making and selling printables is one of my new favorite ways to make money. It has never been easier to do! Printables are an excellent way to use your creativity to make passive income for yourself.  Because you create the printables once and then earn income front hem every time you sell them. If this idea interests you, grab the Printables by Number ebook to learn exactly how to make this work for you.

19. Write and Sell an Ebook

Got something to say? Write an ebook and sell it online. Whether you know how to help babies sleep through the night or you are a master at getting people onto your email list, you can create an ebook about what you know.

One of my favorite resources ever is a short little ebook that changed my life - and my view on making money online. Check it out here.

20. Launch an Online Course

Love the idea of selling your knowledge, but don’t want to spend the time writing an ebook?  Launch an online course instead. Thinkific allows you to put all of your knowledge, videos, and text into one easy-to-follow online course format. You can host your course on their site and they take care of the rest.

21. Become a Social Media Manager

Social media is part of everyone’s marketing plan, but who has time to generate that kind of content every day while running a business? When you manage a company’s social media presence, you can help them garner the attention they want and establish an online brand. Good social media managers are in high demand.

22. Use Your Technical Skills as a Website Designer

Nothing gets more questions in my inbox than how to set up a website. If you are one of the lucky few who have figured it out, then you can virtually make a career for yourself by designing websites for others. Finding clients is easier than ever, especially if you are willing to do website maintenance as well. Running an online business is hard enough without having to figure out how to set up a website and keep it running. When you take that off someone’s plate you can charge premium prices for your work.

23. Earn Big as a Copywriter

Though we already covered Freelance Writing above, I wanted to dedicate an entire number in this list to copywriting. Copywriting can be done as a freelancer, but to really blow the roof off your earning potential, you need to treat your copy skills like a business.

For that, you need a website, a blog, and examples of your work. Back in the day when I first started out with no money, no resume, and absolutely no street cred, I created a copywriting portfolio full of “fake” sales letters for non-existent products. I got my first freelance copywriting gig based on a sales letter that I had written for a fake product. Don’t be afraid to start out without any experience as long as you learn the fundamentals of selling with your writing.

Grab this course that taught me everything I knew in the early days of my freelance copywriting career.

24. Harness Your Inner Video Editor

Make money editing videos professionally. All those YouTube channels out there making money are full of professionally edited videos.  If you know how to make videos look good with professional software, you can farm out your skills and get paid.

25. Create and Sell Journals Online

Amazon is full of journals for sale. If all these people can do it, you can too. It’s simply a matter of creating a journal, uploading it to KDP, and watching the money roll in. Well, kind of.

26. Share Your Expertise with the World as a Coach

In the offline world, coaches deal with mouthy high school kids and teach history. But online, coaches make the big bucks and help people make transformational changes in their lives and businesses. If you are known for helping others, you may be cut out to be a coach.

Making a living as a coach takes a level of expertise in your subject matter and online marketing skills to get leads for new clients. Once you are established as a coach, you can make great money as a coach - all from the comfort of your own home.

27. Be Heard with a Podcast

You can start a podcast to make money online. If you have something to say that people want to hear, this might be a good choice. You can teach your audience, relay information or just entertain them. Starting a podcast is a great way to potentially earn money from sharing what you are passionate about with the world.

28. Be the Webinar Hostess with the Mostest

Hosting webinars is a great tool for making money online. Because you can record your sales message once and use it to drive traffic to a sales page forever. But the really great news is that you don’t ’have to have a product of your own to make money with webinars.  You can use affiliate marketing.

Simply put together a presentation that helps your audience with a problem and suggest products that can help them solve that problem. Or you can even use the webinars created by the affiliate marketers themselves.

GetResponse has all of the tools that you need to create and sell with webinars.

29. Make it Members Only

Start a membership site. A membership site has lots of the same attributes as any other website except that you can charge people for access to part of the site. You can provide information, services, software, and a host of other things for people on a membership website.

Thrive Themes has a built-in plugin to manage your membership site that I love.

30. Start a T-Shirt Empire

Do you know those adorable t-shirts that you see sold everywhere that say things like “Tired as a Mother”? Well, that’s a viable business option and you don’t even have to make the shirts yourself. There are companies like Printify that will print and ship the t-shirts for you.

31. Sell Your Designs

If you have a knack for graphic design, you can put those skills to use by selling your designs. Much like selling stock images, there are plenty of business owners who pay for infographics, logo designs, and even patterns. Check out some of the designs on Creative Market to see all the possibilities. I use these kinds of designs to create printables quickly, ebooks covers that look professional, and to find the perfect fonts. Now you can get paid t provide those same kinds of graphics and templates.

32. Teach Them How to Teach

Got some teaching experience? You can sell your teacher resources and lesson plans on Teachers Pay Teachers. As a homeschool teacher, I have lots of experience with this platform - and I really like it. It is a great place not only to get the resources you need but also to earn extra money with the teacher resources I create.

33. Clear Off the Bookshelves

Got a ton of books that you have read, or will never read, just sitting around collecting dust? Sell them on Amazon! Used books are a huge commodity on Amazon. And the biggest retailer of books in the world makes it easy for you to get started.  Even if you don’t have a ton of books lying around, you can start a used bookstore. You can start selling used books with just one book and build as you go.

34. Turn Your Words into Cash

Write articles and blog posts for companies and let your words make you extra money. There are tons of companies on FlexJobs and Fiverr looking to hire writers that can churn out words daily. If you can quickly write articles and blog posts, then you can make good money as an article writer.

35. Make Money on YouTube

Even my 10-year-old has a YouTube channel. Monetizing it is another matter. If you aren’t camera shy, YouTube may be just the extra income you have been looking for. Start a channel that is based on a subject you can create content on easily and that you can monetize. The keys to your YouTube success are views and subscribers. A YouTube channel can be monetized in lots of ways just like a blog.

36. Buy and Sell Domains for Cash

Every website out there has a domain name. And lots of companies and bloggers will pay to get the domain name they want. By buying domains cheaply on websites like Namecheap and Domain.com you can then turn around and resell that domain for a profit - without doing anything at all. Often you can resell the domain on the same platform where you bought it. Buy on Namecheap, sell on eBay, Afternic, Flippa, Sedo.com

37. Become an Affiliate Publisher

You have heard of affiliate marketing, but did you know that for every affiliate marketer out there, there are just as many affiliate publishers? All you need is a product or service that you create.  Simply create a product and then list it on affiliate marketplaces like ShareASale and Clickbank to get a fleet of affiliate marketers chomping at the bit to sell for you.

38. Earn Money as a Photographer

A good camera and a passion for photography can earn you the income that you are looking for. Even if you don’t want to do family portraits, there are ways to make money as a photographer. You can even sell photos you already have or take stock photos for companies to us.

39. Make Money with Your Own Beauty Products

Can you make lotions, perfumes, and scented oils? You could start your very own shop with custom beauty products. You don’t need much inventory to get started. You can do made-to-order products until you understand which of your products are going to sell. Then simply list them on Etsy and you are off to a great start!

40. Become a Niche Marketer

Niche marketing is a great way to make money online. With a niche website, you can drive lots of traffic very easily with SEO tactics. When you create a blog around a certain niche, you can monetize with your own products or with affiliate marketing. You can even start a niche website without knowing anything about your chosen niche by using ghostwriters you find on Fiverr. Niche websites can even be sold for thousands of dollars if they have a strong enough track record.

41. Get Paid for Your Opinion

While you may not make a full-time income by taking surveys, it can be a great way to earn some side cash while also being heard. Tell me that doesn’t sound nice after a day full of repeating yourself a thousand times to kids who have their faces glued to tablets.

42. Start an Online Newsletter

When you have knowledge that people will pay for, there are endless ways to make money online. One of those ways is by starting a paid newsletter. Whether you teach people how to monetize their email list or compile a list of the best freelance jobs out there, you can charge a fee for that knowledge. All you need is an email autoresponder like GetResponse and information.

43. Become an Author

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be an author. I always saw myself as a horror or mystery writer and I never imagined that I would make my living writing nonfiction words. Along the way to making money as a fiction author, I have learned how to get readers and make money for my words. And I recommend that anyone with a passion for words try their hand at becoming an author.

44. Check Out Gigs on Fiverr and FlexJobs

Like the idea of what you see here but didn’t see a make-money idea you like? Check out Fiverr and FlexJobs. Not only are these great places to find jobs that you like, but they are also great ways to get your creative juices flowing. Each website has a list of categories of jobs. Sometimes these categories are enough to inspire you to create your own perfect online business idea.

45. Create Recipes for Cash

Every night at dinner time I Google some kind of recipe. Maybe it’s just a sauce to add to my chicken or a full-on meal plan. Where do all those recipes come from? Why, you. If you can create great recipes, that is.

46. Respond to Emails to Make Money

Email is the holy grail of the online world. And you can get paid to do just about every email-related activity that exists. Including reading them.

English or history or math or whatever. There are plenty of online teaching opportunities for those who are looking to make money and have a knack for teaching others.

48. Give Attorneys Your Opinion

There are plenty of websites where you can give your opinion in exchange for money. And attorneys are among the highest paying of these. Attorneys need opinions from the public to make their arguments in court as strong as possible. If you like to give your opinion, this might be just the opportunity you are looking for.

49. Sell Ad Space

If you have a blog or website, consider selling ad space on your blog to make some extra cash. Don't be one of those annoying sites where you can't read the content for pop-up ads, but running a few related ads on your website can be a great additional source of income.

50. Become an SEO Consultant

If you have SEO experience, there are always companies looking for help in getting found online. SEO can be intimidating in the beginning, and many business owners don't have time to learn. They would rather pay someone who knows what they are doing. That could be you!
